Gun Deer Hunt

Next Hunt:  Jan. 6-9, 2011

Wilcox Academy led the way in 1984 in establishing one of the finest hunts of its kind found anywhere.  Held each January, the GUN DEER HUNT coincides with the rut in this area.  There is no better time to hunt south Alabama than January.

You will be guided on private lands.  These lands are typically managed by landowners and their clubs for their own hunting.

The county has a deer limit of either a buck and a doe per day or two does per day.  (3 buck per season limit).  There is no reason to leave Wilcox County without venison!

In recent years more and more landowners have begun some sort of quality deer management.  Because these are private lands and most are intensively managed by the landowners or club members, some properties have a size limit on bucks that can be taken.  Most strive to take only the older class bucks, the 3 1/2 year old or older bucks that are mostly 8 points or better.  By allowing the younger bucks to mature these properties contain a sizeable number of quality bucks and are generally the most productive for our guests in taking quality bucks.

Guided by a member, you will hunt from a tree stand, shooting house, or if you prefer, from your own climbing tree stand.  You will hunt on wheat/oat fields, hardwood bottoms, pine plantations, or clear-cuts.

THE HUNT INCLUDES:

  • Guide service & lands

  • Cleaning & storage of your rack & venison
